Professional Experiences
Dr. Tavakoli has more than 15 years experience in psychological research, teaching, counselling, and psychotherapy. She completed her Ph.D. in Social and Cross-Cultural Psychology at Carleton University. She holds two M.A. degrees--one in Health Psychology and the other in Educational Psychology-- and a B.A. degree in Clinical Psychology. After completing her Ph.D., Dr. Tavakoli served as an assistant professor of Psychology at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, where she taught psychology courses. Then she completed a Post-Doctoral research project--funded by the Government of Canada-- and a two-year Post-Doctoral clinical practice, treating clients with a wide range of psychological needs. During her Ph.D. programe, Dr. Tavakoli completed her Internship at the Catholic Family Services of Ottawa doing individual and group psychotherapy and counselling. Meanwhile, she taught psychology courses and worked for the Paul-Menton Centre for students with special needs at Carleton University, where she administered standardized cognitive and educational tests and counselled students about learning strategies and social adjustment.
Before starting her PhD programme, Dr. Tavakoli was a university professor and department chair. During her tenure, she established and ran the Counselling Centre for University Students, and served as its first director and psychological counselor. Meanwhile, she served as the psychological consultant of several television pedagogical programs for adolescents and children, creating an equivalent of Sesame Street.
Believing in the Scientist-Practitioner model, Dr. Tavakoli is committed to staying abreast of current psychological research, attending workshops and conferences, and publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals. As a prolific scholar, researcher, and writer, she has published over 60 psychological and educational articles, and seven books and book supplements. One of her books, A Journey to the 21st Century, won a national prize as the best adolescents’ pedagogical book of 2003. Currently she serves as an Editorial Board Member of the British Journal of Education, Society, and Behavioural Science.
